Charge Controller
A charge controller is an electronic component in a photovoltaic system that has the task of optimally controlling and monitoring the charging process of accumulators (batteries). It protects the battery from overcharging, deep discharging, and other harmful influences to ensure a long service life and high performance.
How it works:
- Voltage and current limitation: The charge controller limits both the voltage and the current delivered to the battery. This ensures that the battery is not subjected to excessive energy and thus damaged.
- Charging algorithms: Modern charge controllers use complex charging algorithms that divide the charging process into different phases. These phases take into account factors such as battery temperature and state of charge to ensure a gentle and efficient charging process.
- Protection functions: In addition to overcharge and deep discharge protection, many charge controllers offer additional protection functions, such as short circuit protection and over-temperature protection.
Types of charge controllers:
- PWM charge controllers: Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) charge controllers regulate the charging by switching the charge current on and off at short intervals. They are cost-effective, but less efficient than MPPT charge controllers.
- MPPT charge controllers: Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) charge controllers continuously determine the optimal operating point of the solar modules and adjust the system voltage accordingly. This maximizes the energy yield from the solar modules.
