Global solar energy is experiencing unprecedented growth, cementing its position as a leading force in the global energy mix. According to the latest report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), global renewable energy capacity reached an impressive 4,448 GW by the end of 2024, with solar accounting for the largest share at 1,865 GW.

In 2024 alone, renewable energy capacity increased by a massive 585 GW, a 15.1% increase over the previous year. Solar energy contributed significantly to this expansion, adding 452 GW, or 32.2%, and accounting for over three-quarters of the total increase in renewable capacity. The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that renewable energy will already supply 33% of global electricity by 2025.

Solar photovoltaics (PV) is the clear growth driver. In 2024, this technology accounted for almost all of the increase in solar energy, with newly installed capacity of 451.9 GW. The IEA expects solar PV to account for around 80% of the growth in global renewable energy capacity between 2024 and 2030.

For example, new six-layer solar cells are being developed that can convert almost half of the captured sunlight into electricity. The falling costs of solar systems are also playing a crucial role. Installation costs have fallen by around 65% over the past decade. 81% of newly added renewable energies are now cheaper than fossil fuel alternatives. In addition, numerous governments around the world support the introduction of solar energy through subsidy programs and incentives.

Impact on global energy supply and the climate

The growing importance of solar energy has significant implications for global energy supply and efforts to combat climate change. Solar energy is expected to meet half of the growth in global electricity demand. Electricity generation from renewable energies is expected to surpass coal-fired power generation this year. By 2029, solar PV is expected to overtake hydropower to become the largest renewable energy source worldwide. Because solar energy generates electricity without emitting greenhouse gases, it is key to reducing the energy sector's carbon footprint.

China continues to play a leading role in the expansion of solar energy, but other regions such as Europe, the USA, India, and Brazil are also seeing significant increases. Forecasts indicate that solar energy will continue to expand its dominance in the coming years and could potentially completely replace fossil fuels by 2050.
