Grid Connection
A grid connection is the essential link between a photovoltaic system and the public electricity grid. It allows the generated solar power to be fed into the grid while also enabling the consumption of electricity from the grid.
How it works:
- Transfer station: At the boundary between the photovoltaic system and the public grid, there is a transfer station. Here, the inverter of the system is connected, which converts the direct current from the solar panels into alternating current that can be fed into the grid.
- Meter: A smart meter measures both the fed-in solar power and the electricity consumed from the grid.
- Safety measures: Various safety measures, such as surge protection and residual current protection, ensure the safe operation of the system and the grid.
Types of grid connections:
- Feed-in connections: Here, only the generated solar power is fed into the grid.
- Bidirectional connections: These allow both the feeding in of solar power and the consumption of electricity from the grid.
Importance for system operators:
- Revenue settlement: The grid connection is the basis for the settlement of the fed-in solar power with the energy supplier.
- Grid usage: Grid connection fees usually apply for the use of the grid.
- Grid stability: System operators contribute to the stability of the power grid by feeding in excess solar power.
